Log Harvesting

Production is key, but Safety is the most important concern every day. It can get hectic trying to hit our numbers every day but we cannot sacrifice safety for any reason.

It is the end of April and it appears winter is over. The extreme weather we have been getting has caused some big schedule changes and delays. Toquart has 34,000m3 remaining, 24,000 conventional and 8,000 m3 heli. Due to road construction delays, caused by weather, we will be down to a single yarder working for the month of May. Corresponding road delays in Cataract will also limit yarding volumes in May. So again we will have a tough time hitting production budgets in May.

Look out in June as we will have a lot of ground to make up. There will be a lot of wood available and a helicopter to yard. The helicopter will have a bit of a challenge as we will have to return to several blocks to complete yarding.

We are going to have a busy summer once our roads get caught up. All road headings are moving ahead well, at this time.

We are beginning to get challenges on our length structure, specifically hem standard. It has caused me to review all sort length structure. We will begin to work with lengths in all areas starting at the stump. In the past few years white wood fibre prices have been so low we have been maximizing recovery volumes, focusing on volume rather than quality, we will have to improve. Our AH, BH, HK and BK sorts have taken serious challenge from our custom cut customers, offering below market levels due to butt flare and grain deviation remaining on prime length logs. Cedar is a forgiving species with many lengths available for manufacturing but CB, CN and CS need some improvement.

Equipment down time continues to be an issue effecting daily production. We have some older equipment that requires TLC. Whether it's yarders, loaders or trucks, more attention to communicating our maintenance requirements is needed. Prioritizing our limited manpower, too, is a trick at best but without operator input we can waste a lot of time; written helps.
