Information SystemsThe big news in IT this issue is that I have received approval to upgrade our WAN (the links between Head Office, the Mill and the Airport) from the existing 1.44 MHz T1's to 10 MHz fibre.
This is great news for users at the remote sites as they have been finding opening and saving large files and email attachments excruciatingly slow. The new forestry office on 4th avenue will be connected to Head Office via fibre as well.

As part of this upgrade we will also be installing a new ip based phone system at our new Head Office in the RimRock Gaming Centre. The new system will allow the Mill, Airport and Forestry phone lines to run over the fibre. This means that we will all be on the same phone system. To call someone at the Mill from the Airport for instance you will simply dial an extension.

The phone lines will all come into the new head office on what is called a PRI. This is basically a single line with 23 channels, so between the 4 locations, 23 people can be using outside lines at once and an unlimited number of us can be talking amongst ourselves at the same time. The PRI also includes the ability to have numerous phone numbers at a very low monthly cost so we will be setting up direct lines for many users that do not currently have one. This will hopefully reduce the work load on reception.

This is a very exiting time for me. My part in the Head Office move and the WAN and phone system upgrades will be one of the biggest projects I have ever been involved in, let alone responsible for.

The other news of course is Coulsons purchase of the Martin Mars. Way to go Wayne! I have no idea at this point how that acquisition is going to effect my department, but I'm sure it will prove to be interesting. I would imagine that users at the bomber base will soon require email and access to our Corridor aviation program. It is all very exiting.

The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good people to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.
