The Coastal Forest Industry continues to change with the latest announcement by Timberwest to permanently close their mill in Campbell River. The net job loss will be 275 people and less lumber into Japan, Australia and Belgium but more logs being exported into the US and Japan. This will have a significant impact on the Catalyst paper mill in Campbell River as this facility was a primary source of chips.
The snow has been playing havoc on our harvesting operations so we have had to purchase logs from third parties which is the first time in a couple of years to keep the manufacturing facility operational. We have committed to purchasing logs from Iisaak in the second quarter which is Forest Stewardship Council certified and believe this will give us an advantage in the lumber market. This FSC certification is the highest environmental standard that there is in the Forest Industry and we plan on certifying TFL 54 with our partners, Mamook.
Please work safely and watch out for your fellow workers.
