I’m going off topic (just a little) this issue, but I feel that this is an important enough topic to warrant it.

I had the pleasure of participating in the inaugural Vancouver Island Motorcycle Ride for Dad in Victoria on May 24th.  The Motorcycle Ride for Dad is Canada's biggest annual motorcycle event dedicated to fighting prostate cancer through research and education. In 2008, it will take place in 18 cities across Canada.

The Motorcycle Ride for Dad began in Ottawa in 2000. Garry Janz, along with the support of the Ottawa Police Association, the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre Foundation and a handful of volunteers, organized that first Ride.  Since then, the Ride has been raising money for prostate cancer research and education. Men, women and children rally each year to support the Ride in staggering numbers.

Congratulation Vancouver Island !!!!   The Ride for Dad was a success.

On Saturday, May 24th, 2008, 537 motorcycles participated in the first annual Vancouver Island Motorcycle Ride for Dad.  Motorcycle Teams of the Victoria Police Department, Saanich Police Department and the RCMP escorted the group from the Save-On Foods Memorial Centre to Ogden Point.

The first annual Vancouver Island Motorcycle Ride for Dad set a record as the largest inaugural event of its kind with 537 motorcycles. In 2007 Edmonton Ride for Dad Chapter had the record at 407.  The Vancouver Island Chapter raised over $60,000 through pledges and donations.  That amount is expected to grow to almost $70,000 over the next few weeks as pledges and donations continue to come in.

After the ride through Victoria I participated in a poker run through the back roads to Duncan and back to the starting point, The Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, for the closing ceremonies. I had a wonderful time and met some great people. Can’t wait until next year!
