ISO14001 ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (EMS)

As I have reported in previous Log n Talk articles with the purchase of the Martin Mars and creation of Coulson Flying Tankers Division we have been in the process of creating a separate on-line Aviation Environmental Management System (EMS) manual. The Coulson ISO14001 on-line EMS Manual will now have 3 divisions Manufacturing, Timberlands and Aviation.

I have been working with our Environmental Consultant, Mr. Iain Cuthbert and Wayne Darlington to develop Standard Operating Procedures for the Martin Mars - Coulson Flying Tanker’s base at Sproat Lake and the Coulson Aircrane Helicopter Hanger at the Alberni Clayoquot Regional Airport. SOPs for mobile field operations will be part of the final manual. The SOPs are essentially a re-write of existing procedures for prevention of pollution; aircraft maintenance; aircraft fuel management; bulk fuel storage; petroleum and chemical waste collection storage and disposal as well as procedures related to mobile field operations. The SOPs still need to be reviewed by Roy Copeland, Paul Ryan and John Coughlin then fine tuned and rolled out to replace existing EMS procedures.

We had originally planned for the Aviation Division ISO14001 registration audit to be carried out during the last week of July, but due to the deployment of the Hawaii Martin Mars to California, the July audit has been cancelled to the last week in September or possibly the last week of November 2008. I will advise everyone of the final audit date once the date is finalized.

FIRE PREVENTION and SUPPRESSION

Well summer is finally here. July has been hot and dry. The woods are getting very dry. Although Stewardson Inlet’s logging operations have risen from a very low fire danger rating to a low rating at the time of writing this article -- all it will take is 2 or 3 days of outflow winds to increase the fire danger to moderate and high and we could have a serious fire.

We have taken extra fire prevention measures at the Stewardson Dry Land Sort by having a mineral soil fireguard constructed around the perimeter of the sort as a precaution to prevent a fire from escaping the sort operations.

On Monday July 28th, Ron Sorensen will be conducting an additional Basic Fire Suppression & Safety training refresher course for the Stewardson crews. The training will involve a fire drill to familiarize the crew with fire commend structure, safety items and the use and deployment of a fire water tanker truck with a high pressure fire pump.

Remember where the Emergency Fire tools and pumps are located and to only use the emergency fire tools for fire suppression.

We request that everyone do their part to prevent an operational fire from staring and that should one start, take immediate action to suppress it and report it to headquarters immediately.
